Athlete of the Week
October 30 - November 5

Field Hockey - Maggie Burlison

Maggie Burlison is the varsity field hockey teams final Athlete of the Week. Maggie is one of the most dedicated field hockey players we have had in our program in a long time. She became our unofficial captain over the summer as she took it upon herself to organize team pick up games. Her “never say no” attitude made it difficult for teammates to be “too busy”. Maggie, selected as a team captain, was also a great leader on the field both in practice and in games. She made sure the freshman on the team felt included, often choosing them as partners in practice to push them and help them improve their skills. Maggie was a quiet leader on the field. She was not a flashy player but was able to finesse the ball down the field and set up her teammates to score. Her team leading, six assists show this. While people often key in on the scorer in a game, coaches know what happens before the score is crucial to the teams success. Maggie didnít care who scored as long as we did, a true team player! We wish Maggie all the best as she looks to college and hope she returns to cheer on S-E field hockey.

Cross Country - Gabby Huff

As coaches, it is often difficult to give just one athlete extra praise. In this case, it is justified. In early September, Gabby injured herself and had to accept that her season was finished. A tough pill to swallow for any athlete who loves their sport. Heartbroken, she remained faithful to her captain responsibilities and assisted the team. Both modified and varsity have benefited from her consistent pep talks and downright “out-of-control” enthusiasm!!!  GabbyĂs spirit is infectious and will remain with us as we head towards Sectionals on November 5th at Jamesville Beach State Park in Syracuse.

Girls Swimming - Destinie Holmquist

Destinie Holmquist is the girls varsity swim team Athlete of the Week. Destinie is in her second year and brings tremendous athleticism and personal determination to swimming from her other varsity sports. Her outstanding athletic abilities along with a relentless work ethic are key ingredients for her early success and continued growth in both swimming and as a team leader.  Destinie gives her best to devote both her toughness and physical qualities to each practice and in swim meets. Already, she has dramatically lowered her times in the 50 and 100 Freestyle.  In the 50 Free she has gone from 38.5 to 32.4 in 4 weeks, which is an incredible feat for a sprint race, where seconds are very difficult to drop.  In the 100 Free, she has dropped another 5 seconds to 120.6.  She quickly realized hard work and determination brings success to swimming where technique is as important as working smart.  She excelled at numerous individual and relay events this season and earned several team points in our competitions. As a result of her determination and persistence she has qualified for the Section III Championships, for all 3 relay events and is close to qualifying in two other singular events. Her willingness to work hard and focus on becoming a better student and athlete is an inspiration to the coaches, and more importantly, a great example for all of her teammates to emulate.
